Our team leaves in a little less than a week! Please keep them in your prayers. Pray for safe travel, high spirits, and great fellowship as they work to bring people clean water and teach them about personal hygiene!
We’ll be leaving at 7:30am on Saturday, July 31. If you want to go, please email Drew Henricks at dhenricks@gmail.com by Wednesday, July 28 to let him know if you’d be willing to drive or if you’ll need a ride. Cost is $5 per car, plus $6 for a picnic lunch. Dinner’s on your own by carpooling groups. If you’re riding rather than driving, please bring $10 to help your driver cover gas. There is the possibility of going on kayak and canoe expeditions less than 15 minutes from the beach for $30-$50. Please email Drew if you’re interested.

Last spring, I attended a conference called Q. Why is it called Q? The conference hosts would never say for sure, but most of the attendees think that Q stands for the many questions the conference asks. Q is not your typical Christian leadership conference offering tips for how to do some aspect of church-life more effectively. Instead, it’s a conference bringing together leaders in media, social justice, education, business, and the church to “think-tank” about some of the biggest issues facing us today.
Each speaker at Q has to boil his or her presentation down to 18 minutes. Once he or she steps on the stage, a digital clock everyone can see is set to 18 minutes. Once the clock hits 00:00 – the speaker must stops whether or not he or she is finished.
After several 18-minute sessions, audience members can choose to go to one of the speaker’s talk-back sessions. A talk-back session is a time to question the speaker on his or her presentation, to share ideas, and to brainstorm about ways to put ideas into action.
What most struck me about Q is it left me with more questions than answers. Sometimes two speakers would have directly opposing views. Both were well-thinking people addressing the same issue and coming up with opposing answers. This paradox made me realize how important it is to really consider things – not just to think I know the answer.
In future blog posts, I’m going to try to give a thumbnail version of some of the issues Q’s caused me to ponder. Because of Q, I am reading Flickering Pixels – How Technology Shapes Your Faith by Shane Hipps. So as I’m using technology to write this blog, I’m wondering:
How does technology enhance my faith?
How can technology impede my faith?
How would God have me use technology?
My thoughts on these questions and more are coming soon….
Please join us this Sunday for a liturgical Christmas worship service titled, “You Shall Call His Name Jesus.” We will be doing guided responsive readings from the gospels, singing Christmas worship songs, and taking communion together. The service is a chance for us to worship Jesus, our savior and king, at this special time of year.
On December 27 in the Venture worship service I will be preaching a sermon titled, “How Can We Trust the Bible?” There has been some interest in this question by people in the Venture community lately, so I’d like to address the topic.
Here’s the problem, though: it’s a huge topic. There are many different specific questions that could be addressed in the short time that we have. So, I’d like your help. If you have any specific questions about the trustworthiness of the Bible, please either post a reply here or send me an email at danny@venture-online.org with your question. With Christmas coming up, the earlier you send me the question, the better. I hope to be able to get to all of your questions.
To give you an idea, here are some of the questions that I have now:
-How do we know that the Bible is the infallible word of God?
-Didn’t men write the Bible?
-Why are some books included and others not?
-How much of the Bible is taken from other belief systems?
Thanks for the help. I look forward to our time together on the 20th and the 27th.
